In May of 1961, Ray Dambach opened the North Woods Inn, which
quickly became famous for its steak and prime rib dinners. Open six nights a
week, guests often gather during the summer to have a cocktail in the lovely
grounds. Paul Bunyan stood out front, but sadly, he was taken
down due to a new sign code in the city of Littleton. "He was too big," they
said. A picture of Paul Bunyan is displayed on the wall by the entrance to
the dining room.
The North Woods Inn was a gathering place for the owners, trainers,
and jockeys from Centennial Race Track during its long life in Littleton.
Governors, mayors, actors, and actresses have all enjoyed an evening at the
North Woods Inn. Young children, who have experienced the thrill of
throwing peanut shells on the floor and tackling Paul-Bunyan-sized meals in
our logging camp atmosphere, have returned as adults to introduce their
children to the same fine food of the North Woods Inn.
A friendly ghost lived at the North Woods Inn. As witnessed by
employees, the police, and guests of the restaurant, he made his presence
known by lighting candles, opening windows, and even moving around the kitchen
equipment. We miss him but we think we may have a ghost here; we just aren't
sure yet.
We moved to a new location in January of 1997. Although it is not the old
building, which was falling apart, it is a wonderful place and is almost the
same. The park like setting is a great place for people to walk and enjoy the
peaceful atmosphere. Fred Maten was at the North Woods Inn since it
opened in 1961 and was the sole owner until his untimely death in April of
2001. The restaurant is now run by his wife Pat, stepson Mike, and
irreplaceable kitchen manager, Mark.
Nowhere in the Denver area can you find a steak and prime rib like you will
eat at the North Woods Inn. The famous soup is homemade daily and
The Cottage Cheese is one of a kind. The Cottage Cheese mix and the steak
seasoning are both prepared in our kitchen from private recipes created over
41 years ago. These seasonings may be purchased at the bar and are also
available at your local supermarkets.
Call ahead seating (NOT available on Sundays) and reservations are accepted.
